It is never a convenient time for a multiple sclerosis relapse, but unless you are willing to call it a day and give up, you’ve got do all you can to stay in the game.

My latest flare-up occurred during the heart of winter. My first choice would be to stay curled up on the sofa in front of the fireplace and let the world go by, but things just weren’t working out that way. Sometimes you have no choice but forge ahead brave the great outdoors -- wind, snow, ice, and all.

It was in preparation of just such an excursion that I culled through my folding walking canes and chose what I refer to as my “ice cane.” Actually, the secret lies in the ice attachment that fits on most canes and grips snow and ice for an added sense of security. That small adjustment made my appointed rounds that much easier.

I’ve often written that we must do all we can to maintain our independence, and assistive devices like canes help us to do just that. I find that having several adjustable, folding canes of various types has helped me navigate the world at my own pace. Cane accessories like the ice and snow grippers and wrist straps add to the safety and convenience of a cane.

Not all canes are adjustable, though, so if you’re thinking of purchasing a cane, you will want to make sure to have it sized correctly, and that you are using it properly to avoid posture and balance problems. A little homework goes a long way.

If physical symptoms are getting in the way of normal activity, do something about it! Whether it’s purchasing a cane or another mobility aid, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of everything at your disposal so that you can continue to function as independently as possible.
